I actually like the way that paint/lacquer feels and yeah, JoJo's sticks are nice.
I'm no help on the wax; I'm WAY too lazy to modify my sticks. (e.g. sanding or something) Maybe try powder on your hands instead?
...yeah. Just don't try to take a coarse sandpaper & take off the lacquer like i did yrs ago. Then it's even WORSE. Had to take a pocket knife & put a zillion angled cut-grooves in the shank to stop the insane powdery-feeling slippage. [Yes, i DID dust off the stick aft SP'g; even dunked them in water to bring out the grain. Nothing seemed to work.] Then i found drum stick wax...& the story ends happily...
I don't know about the paint you described but DSW works on your everyday standard lacquered sticks...[very] little getting used to IMO but well worth it, esp when dealing w sweat issues & such.

Hi Louie,
Hope ur doing well,
I Only use wax in certain situations IE: This Mon im playing at the Great british R&B Festival and the sports hall we play is HOT!!! 1600 people with no ventilation and a BIG lighting rig aint fun!
But the stuff i use and swear by is H3 Drumscience drumstick wax, It resists sweat really well but can easily be removed with a towel/paper towel.

i think its pretty well distributed in the UK but if ur struggling my local drum store
www.drumcentre.co.uk stock it.
let us know how you get on,
Lee
thanks lee, i'll give it a try. jojo's sticks are real nice with a very clear but soft sound on cymbals and they just feel funky - would like to stick with them (excuse the pun) but need to find a solution to the laquered sticks - the evolutions also have a nice weight balance but again have the laquer - i honestly dont know how there guys play without their hands sweating at all!!?
Hey Louie,
Its weird i use the Vic Firth 5a's and im fine with them (unless its the HOT gigs)but i also use those evolutions and i know what you mean that laquer is a bitch! and although not to big a deal considering that shits getting on your hats /cymbals umm... rant over
I did a course with a guy who put some strange stuff called Gorilla Snot on his sticks, so, apparently, he could play ride patterns using just one finger, cos the stick actually stuck to his hand.
This guy also would wear one sandal on his hihat foot, but would never wear anything on his bass drum foot and liked riding large motorcycles. I generally steer clear of that stuff you put on your sticks, but i guess if you think you need it...

checking out some new sticks and am really liking the jojo mayer model by vic firth - all the models i like seem to have this laquer-type coating on which is fine until you start sweating - anyway i just wondered if anyone has tried the drum stick wax that you can buy - is it any good and will it work properly on the laquered sticks??
thanks.
I've tried that sticky cloth type thing that vic firth sells and I didn't really like it. It works fine, but then your hands are super sticky and nasty after each set. And it's quite possible to put too much on which doesn't let the stick move freely.

I've never tried it but I heard somewhere that you can prevent your hands from sweating by spraying a small amount of antiperspirant on your palms. If it works for armpits I guess it could work for palms. My concern is will it be so dry the sticks would slip for lack of moisture? Has anyone ever tried this?
